5 June 2008 MEP CHICHESTER VISIT TO CENTRAX GAS TURBINE DIVISION, NEWTON ABBOT – MONDAY 9 JUNE South West Conservative MEP, Giles Chichester, has been invited to visit Centrax in Newton Abbot to be briefed on their collaboration with Rolls-Royce in the successful packaging and marketing of the Trent 60 gas turbine in Europe. He will meet with Guy West, Director of the Gas Turbine Division at 10.30 am on Monday 9 June. Centrax has recently signed the largest contract in their 60-year history with an order for four Trent 60 gas generators for the £70m gas turbine power station at St. Brieuc in Brittany, France. MEP Chichester, who is Leader of the British Conservatives in the European Parliament and their Conservative Energy Spokesman, will be accompanied on this visit by Anne Marie Morris, the Prospective Parliamentary Conservative Candidate for the Teignbridge Constituency. 18 June 2008  MEP CHICHESTER LEADS DEBATE ON THE LIBERALISATION OF EU ENERGY MARKET South West Conservative MEP, Giles Chichester, is leading the debate in the European Parliament on the introduction of legislation to liberalise the EU energy market to achieve genuine and sustainable competition for pricing and services. MEP Chichester, who is the Conservative Energy Spokesman and Rapporteur and Coordinator of the EPP-ED Group on the Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee within the European Parliament, is currently involved in steering through Parliament the three reports which comprise the electricity section of the EU Third Energy Package of liberalization measures. He said "Having a fully competitive market is in everyone's interest. It is in the interest of consumers because it means energy is supplied and delivered at the most competitive rate. It also means an improved service to consumers and that is a very important consideration. In a competitive environment, companies tend to be more interested in helping to solve consumers' problems than they might otherwise be." The future of the European energy market following the implementation of this Third Energy Package will require the EU Agency for Cooperation of Energy Regulators to play a positive role to ensure that agreed liberalisation measures are carried out effectively by energy providers. MEP Chichester has expressed the view that “If the Agency is to contribute to the development of an integrated and competitive market for the European Union, it will need extensive powers, independent of the EU Commission, to handle cross border situations andnergy regulators”. The overall aim is to liberalise energy markets and create a fully competitive internal market in Europe. This Third Energy Package represents an important step towards achieving an energy market that is open, flexible and efficient with opportunities for new investment and new entrants, as well as delivering energy at competitive prices.
MEP CHICHESTER WILL LECTURE ON FAMILY BUSINESS AT INAUGURATION

23 May 2008  MEP CHICHESTER IS WORKING TOWARDS THE SLOW DEATH OF THE MONTHLY COMMUTE OF THE EU PARLIAMENT FROM BRUSSELS TO STRASBOURG The campaign to end the European Parliament's monthly commute from Brussels to Strasbourg received a boost today as up to one-third of MEPs voted in favour of proposals sponsored by the Conservatives and the Campaign for Parliamentary Reform (CPR) to reduce the time spent in the French city. Although the proposals did not pass, South West MEP, Giles Chichester, the Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, welcomed the increased numbers of MEPs who voted for the changes. He said: "We are making small but significant steps to end the Strasbourg circus. Year after year, MEPs are voting in increasing numbers to end this costly and environmentally wasteful anachronism. "£170 million per year is spent on hauling 3000 people and their papers from Brussels to Strasbourg and back. It will have to stop one day. Today's vote suggests the momentum is with us. After all, if Rome wasn't built in a day, Strasbourg as a second seat cannot be stopped in a day." 07 May 2008  MEP CHICHESTER SAYS LIBERALISATION OF ENERGY MARKETS IS IN EVERYONE'S INTEREST
South West MEP Giles Chichester, Conservative Leader in the European Parliament, says that liberalised and competitive energy markets are the only way to benefit consumers and companies across Europe by ensuring fair play and making certain that dominant positions are not established without challenge. The European Parliament has endorsed controversial plans to force huge mainland European energy groups to sell off their power transmission networks and open up the EU market to greater competition. MEP Chichester, who is Coordinator of the EPP-ED Group on the Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee, said: "I am strongly in favour of ownership unbundling because I have seen it and believe it is a good model. "Having a fully competitive market is in everyone's interest. It is in the interest of consumers because it means energy is supplied and delivered at the most competitive rate. It also means an improved service to consumers and that is a very important consideration. In a competitive environment, companies tend to be more interested in helping to solve consumers' problems than they might otherwise be. "But it is also in the interests of the companies. It makes the various players in the market more efficient and hopefully more profitable. It makes a more efficient use of our finite energy resource. "One of our needs in Europe is to be competitive. We need a competitive supply of energy. Energy is the second most important thing in the world after food. It is very important to our standard of life and to our economy. It is essential and as such it should be efficient and it should be competitive." For further information, please contact: Conservative Press Office: Peter Wilding,

28 May 2008    MEP CHICHESTER SAVES SAGA HOLIDAYS FROM DESTRUCTIVE EFFECTS OF NEW EU DIRECTIVE
South West Conservative MEP, Giles Chichester has succeeded in diluting an EU proposal which could have destroyed top UK companies like SAGA and Club 18-30. The Commission proposal is aimed at outlawing discrimination in society as a whole, not just inside the workplace, and could have prohibited companies from targeting their services at specific age groups. Although the Commission's plans are likely to be tabled before the summer, MEP Chichester has been assured that they will concentrate only on achieving equal access for the disabled. In a reply to the Conservatives, the Commission stated that no longer will 'there be a potential impact on the business model of companies offering holidays to specific age groups.' MEP Chichester said: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions but it shouldn't be the job of any government to tell companies who they can and cannot sell to however laudable the objectives might be." "The lesson of the last twenty years is clear: people prosper when a free market prospers. Conservatives will always fight against laws which threaten successful businesses and therefore jobs."< The Conservatives were supported in their argument by a Populus poll conducted in March 2008, in which 71% of the 4312 adults questioned across the EU said that it was acceptable for businesses to target age groups and 64% opposed a law against such a practice. 11 March 2008  MEP CHICHESTER CALLS ON THE GOVERNMENT TO ENSURE THE FAIR DISTRIBUTION OF EU FLOOD AID  The European Parliament has voted approval for Britain to receive £123 million from the EU Solidarity Fund to assist those regions affected by last summer’s floods. Commenting on the decision, South West Conservative MEP, Giles Chichester, who is Leader of Conservatives in the European Parliament, emphasised that the British Government must distribute the money fairly to include the South West, in particular Gloucestershire, and not give preference to flood affected areas in Labour’s heartland.
MEP Chichester said: "The bid for this money from the EU Solidarity Fund came only after weeks of pressure from Conservatives last summer. Now we are asking the UK Government to ensure all affected areas across the UK receive their fair share."
The cash, which is paid directly to the Government, is intended to assist with the reconstruction of key infrastructure following the devastating rainfalls across the UK last June and July, estimated to have caused around £3.48 billion worth of damage. Conservative MEPs, who were the first to call on the Government to apply for the EU aid, said the money has to be allocated in one year and after a further six months, the Labour Government would need to justify how it was spent. This is the first time the UK has applied for assistance from the Solidarity Fund, which was created in 2002. The funds should go towards reimbursing local authorities for the costs of emergency services, the flood clean-up and offsetting the expense of restoring infrastructures such as roads and power lines. 11 March 2008 MEP CHICHESTER CALLS FOR THE EU COUNCIL OF MINISTERS TO SUPPORT FREE TRADE AND FREE COMPETITION  Speaking in the European Parliament, South West Conservative MEP, Giles Chichester, Leader of British Conservative MEPs in the Parliament, warned that the forthcoming Council of Ministers must oppose all threats to free trade and support the principles of free competition. Supporting CommissionPresident Jose Manuel Barroso who has warned recently that some European leaders are backsliding towards economic nationalism, MEP Chichester said: "Europe has much more to gain from globalisation than it has to lose. The reality is that European citizens are winners from globalisation with cheap imports, low inflation and low interest rates. And, notwithstanding the emergence of India and China, the EU's share of world exports rose between 2000 and 2006. In France, where protectionist rhetoric is perhaps most marked, a recent report stated that only 3.4% of jobs lost in 2005 could be blamed on so-called "off-shoring". So, we should get all this in perspective and back the Commission President in his strong stance on this matter."
Commenting that Europe can only succeed in international markets if it improves its competitiveness, radically reforms its labour markets and cracks down hard on bad business regulation both at EU and national level, MEP Chichester added:
"The 'Economist' asked the question - "Will today's politicians ever be frank enough to tell the people that globalisation is good for Europe and for them?" President Barroso has been frank. It's time for EU leaders to back him." For further information, please contact: Conservative Press Office: Peter Wilding, tel: +32 (0) 473 861762; peter.wilding@europarl.europa.eu
20th Feb 08 MEP Chichester will lead Conservative MEPs in a Parliamentary Vote against adoption of the Lisbon Treaty The EU needs to move forwards from its current obsession with institutions to a joint focus on issues like the environment, economic competitiveness and global poverty, said South West Conservative MEP, Giles Chichester, Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament. His comments on the future of Europe come in the week that the European Parliament votes on a report endorsing the Lisbon Treaty. Conservatives MEPs will vote against endorsing the Lisbon Treaty which they believe is a carbon copy of the old, rejected European Constitution. The MEPs will continue their campaign for the British people to have their say on the Treaty in a Referendum which was promised them by the Labour Government in its 2005 election manifesto. In a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEP Chichester said: "The Treaty takes Europe in the wrong direction. It transfers substantial new powers to the EU - some of them in extremely sensitive areas of national interest. My Party has a different vision for the future of Europe - a Europe that is more open, dynamic and transparent and less centralised, less uniform and inflexible." He added: "Without widespread public support, the European Union will lack proper legitimacy for what it is doing. It needs to move on from its obsession with institutions. To be fit for the 21st century, the EU needs to focus on issues like the environment, on economic competitiveness and global poverty, to demonstrate it is worthy of public support. It is these things that the future of Europe should be about." Contact: Conservative Press Office: Melanie Warman, tel: +32 (0) 473 658768;
